Environmental & Sustainability Initiatives

At The Billi, the importance of protecting the natural environment that makes Broome such a special destination is recognised. The Billi is committed to continually improving its sustainability practices and reducing its environmental footprint through thoughtful operational choices and community involvement.

Powered by the Broome Sunshine
Broome, in Western Australia’s Kimberley region, is renowned for its abundant sunshine and tropical climate, with around 300 sunny days each year. Clear daylight hours and consistently strong solar exposure make it an ideal setting for harnessing renewable solar energy.

The Billi has invested in solar panels to capture this natural resource, reducing reliance on non-renewable energy and supporting a more environmentally responsible way of operating, while still delivering a comfortable and high-quality guest experience powered by the Kimberley sun.

Reducing Single-Use Plastics

Mindful In-Room Amenities
To help reduce waste and support a more sustainable future, The Billi has chosen not to provide certain single-use plastic amenities in guest rooms, including toothbrushes, combs, and shower caps.

Guests are encouraged to bring any personal items they may require during their stay. Together, these small changes contribute to reducing environmental impact and preserving the beauty of Broome.

Eco-Friendly Pump Dispensers
To further minimise plastic consumption, The Billi has transitioned from individual amenity bottles to large-format amenities throughout the resort.

By replacing single-use shampoo, conditioner, and body wash containers with large refillable pump dispensers, plastic waste is significantly reduced while maintaining the quality and convenience expected throughout the property.

Sustainable Guest Practices

Complimentary Bicycles
Complimentary bicycles are provided for guest use, promoting low-impact transport around the resort and encouraging eco-friendly exploration of Broome.

Recycling Initiatives
Recycling bins for mixed household recyclables, such as paper, cardboard, glass jars, hard plastics, and metal cans, are located throughout the resort, including in villa accommodation, supporting responsible waste management during each stay.

Eco-Conscious Villa Accommodation
The villas are designed with sustainability in mind, incorporating energy-efficient lighting, water-saving features, and waste-reduction measures, allowing comfort and luxury to be enjoyed alongside environmental responsibility.

Protecting Local Wildlife

Cable Beach Turtle Monitoring Program
The coastline of Broome is home to important nesting sites for flatback turtles, one of Australia’s unique marine turtle species.

The Billi’s owners proudly volunteer with the Cable Beach Turtle Monitoring Program in partnership with Parks and Wildlife. During nesting season, early morning monitoring is undertaken along Cable Beach to identify turtle tracks and locate and mark nesting sites.

Through this involvement, The Billi helps raise awareness of local conservation efforts by sharing updates and information with guests and staff, fostering greater appreciation of Broome’s unique natural environment.

Environs Kimberley’s Broome Backyard Bioblitz
The Billi is proud to support Environs Kimberley’s Broome Backyard Bioblitz, a project focused on learning more about the wildlife living in residential areas. As part of this initiative, wildlife sensor cameras are placed discreetly within garden beds and natural areas of the property, positioned only to capture native wildlife activity and never areas where guests or staff are present.

This valuable project contributes to monitoring important threatened and vulnerable species, including the northern brushtail possum, northern blue-tongue skink, and greater bilby, helping improve understanding and protection of Kimberley biodiversity.

Environmental Responsibility & Staff Education

Sustainability is embedded throughout operations and team culture at The Billi.

Staff undertake environmental awareness training and are encouraged to actively support responsible environmental practices both within the workplace and the broader community.

This commitment extends to daily operations, where opportunities are continually sought to reduce waste, improve efficiency, and minimise environmental impact.

Thoughtful Servicing for a Lighter Environmental Footprint
To reduce environmental impact, The Billi Resort offers a weekly housekeeping service rather than daily room servicing. A full service is provided once every seven days, with a refresh service offered around the third or fourth day of each stay, including towel replacement and replenishment of in-room amenities if required. This approach helps reduce water, energy, and chemical use, while still ensuring guest accommodation remains comfortable and well maintained throughout the stay.

Additional towels or amenities may be provided as required.

This considered approach supports a more relaxed, self-contained style of accommodation, in keeping with the private and tranquil nature of The Billi experience, where comfort, ease, and guest enjoyment remain central to the The Billi’s values and standards.

Community Partnerships

Environmental sustainability is closely linked with strong communities. The Billi proudly supports local organisations and volunteer initiatives that contribute to the wellbeing of Broome and its natural environment.

One team member actively serves with the Broome Volunteer Fire Brigade (DFES), assisting in the protection of the local community and surrounding landscapes. Staff are also trained as fire wardens and hold advanced first aid certifications, supporting a safe and prepared environment for both guests and colleagues.

Looking Forward

Sustainability is recognised as an ongoing journey. The Billi remains committed to identifying new ways to reduce its environmental footprint, support conservation initiatives, and contribute positively to the Broome community.

Through thoughtful choices and continuous improvement, The Billi aims to help preserve the beauty of Broome for future generations to enjoy.
